Herman Witsius (1636–1708).15 Cocceius strongly opposed scholasticism, even though he himself produced a systematic theology. There were lengthy and sometimes bitter debates between the followers of Cocceius (the Cocceians) and of Voetius (the Voetians). The former were accused of weakening the Sabbath and being too favorable to the new philosophy of René Descartes called Rationalism.
